The Sitka Film Society Presents

Girls Rock!

Join the Sitka Film Society 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, or 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Coliseum Theater for our annual filmmakers' visit and presentation of the documentary ``Girls Rock!''

The film takes viewers behind the scenes of the Portland Rock 'n' Roll camp for Girls, with a focus on four of the girls with varying ages and backgrounds. You'll meet 8-year old Palace, confident on the outside, but more complicated on the inside; Amelia, 8, a guitarist with her own style; death-metal fan Laura, 15; and Misty, 17, a bass player whose background includes drug addiction and homelessness.

The film shows that the camp is not just about the music, but about creating an environment where the girls learn how to treat each other, support each other and behave around other girls. The camp is about discovering their own potential, as artists and people. As one counselor in the film says, ``They teach girls how to treat other girls.''

The film has been described by one critic as ``happily pulling off the trick of being both entertaining and moving.''

``It's about female empowerment, and about giving girls -- at a crucial time in their development -- the space they need to be themselves.'' -- Moira MacDonald, Seattle Times film critic.

Both shows will be at the Downtown Coliseum Theater. A fundraising dessert party for the rock camp, with filmmaker Arne Johnson in attendance, will follow the Saturday show. The film is rated PG. Johnson and Shane King will also meet with the Sitka High drama class, talk to local young filmmakers in Sitka, and be interviewed on KCAW-FM 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 16, by host Phil Burdick.

Tickets for the film are $8, and tickets for the dessert party are $10, available at Old Harbor Books.
